We recently shared how the Fatboy Construction crew had worked on the exterior of our American Lake home remodel by adding new cedar shingle siding and prepping for a deck remodel. But they’ve also been hard at work on the interior.
Check out these beautiful quarter sawn oak cabinets that have been installed in the home’s kitchen.

You might recall that last year we also installed quarter sawn oak cabinets at this custom construction home in Steilacoom. Quarter sawn oak is produced by cutting the lumber at a 90 degree angle, and is valued for its resulting tightly woven pattern and craftsmanship. The lumber cuts involve more time and yields less lumber than plain sawn oak. Therefore, it is also a more luxurious option for cabinetry.
To the right of the kitchen, we are adding a custom designed bar to suit the homeowner’s entertaining style. We have used the same quarter sawn oak cabinets to tie these spaces together.

A large island helps transition the kitchen into the rest of the open living space.

The cabinetry is also extended into the home’s main living area. These custom built-ins are not only elegant, but provide functional storage space. They flank the newly renovated fireplace.

We will also be adding this ledger stone to complete the fireplace’s final look.

Our house is quickly becoming a home! Stay tuned for further updates.

As part of the American Lake remodel project, we’re constructing a new multi-level deck. At Fatboy Construction, we believe it’s all about starting with a good plan…

We were able to use the existing deck foundation for the new structure. In this photo, Chuck is pinning the hardware that the deck posts will sit.

The deck will connect to the back of the home and extend down to the water. It will be perfect for entertaining on those summer nights.

While we work on the foundation and prep work, the deck load is ready and waiting.

In our next update, we’ll share about the custom cabinets we’ve been adding in the kitchen and living areas.
Several months ago now, our American Lake property remodel was just starting to take shape. Here’s how it looked back in January:

And here’s how it looks today:

With the roofing complete, the Fatboy Construction team got to work on installing beautiful cedar shingle siding. This siding gives this home a rustic, craftsman feel. Cedar shingle siding, while costlier than other options, weathers beautifully and requires little maintenance. It also provides a distinctive look. Consider the difference from the “before” photo above!
When we started this project, the property had a detached carport. As you may recall, we removed that structure.

Then we constructed a fully enclosed garage. It received the same cedar shingle siding as the rest of the house. Here’s how the garage looks today:

We also constructed a custom breezeway that connects the garage to the home. The breezeway was built in tiers to beautifully accommodate the slope of the property.

Here is an inside view of the breezeway, approaching the house. The door will open to a children’s playroom.

We are pleased with the progress of this project! In our next post, we’ll share what we’re doing with the deck.
If you’ve been following our posts, you know that Fatboy Construction does exceptional work on residential remodels and custom construction.
But did you know we are also capable of handling commercial projects?
A month ago we started a remodel of a Lakewood dentistry office, and today, we’re taking you behind the scenes.

As you can see, everything has been removed and stripped down to the framing. Here are where the new hygienist stations will go:
Every business has unique needs, and Fatboy is prepared to address them. For this project, we had to coordinate with certified personnel to assist with removing the nitrous oxide and we’re currently working with the phone company about how to properly disconnect a rather ancient looking switchboard.
We routinely encounter issues like these in the process of getting the job done. Our philosophy? There is an answer for everything, and we’ll find it!
We also understand that when it comes to commercial projects, you’re going to want to resume business as normal as fast as possible. Our skilled team will work diligently to get the job done quickly. And don’t forget, you can log onto Builder Trend at any time for progress on your project.
One challenge of this project will be to expand this current doorway into an emergency exit, which requires a 3 foot opening. We know there is an answer for that, too, and are confident we’ll find it.

Stay tuned for updates on this and other Fatboy Construction projects. If you would like to learn more about having the Fatboy team work on your commercial project, please contact us.
In the past couple months, the Fatboy crew has made significant headway on the American Lake property. In our last report, we had the foundation and strong ties in place for the new garage. That new garage is now completely framed and awaiting drywall inspection.

You might recall that a detached carport previously stood where the garage was constructed. In order to provide continuity between the garage and home, this eye-catching breezeway has been added:
The interior of the home has been framed is also awaiting drywall inspection. While we wait for that to be finalized, we’ll turn our attention to siding the exterior of the house.

We have also begun to focus on the deck. We removed the old deck and have prepped the foundation. The new deck will consist of three tiers and be perfect for entertaining and taking in the stunning lake views.
Here is another view of the breezeway, taken from the side of the house:

Change is underway at the American Lake property we shared initially in November.
With the foundation and strong-ties in place, the new garage is ready to be framed. The garage is positioned in front of the house, and a new breezeway will be constructed to attach the two structures.
Here is a view of where the breezeway will soon be added:
Inside the property, the Fatboy crew has been hard at work making structural changes to the framing that will result in an open living floor plan that maximizes the property’s stunning lake view.
We removed a wall, and added a steel beam equipped to handle the new load. Steel beams are most commonly used in commercial construction, but it suited the engineering needs of this residential remodel perfectly.
The homeowner had previously added on rooms to either end of the house with a flat roof. In order to tie-in these sections with the existing structure, our team has been framing a new roof. This will provided a vaulted ceiling inside, and better tie-in to the new roofline this house is about to get!

Here is a final view of this property as of early January.

Today we wanted to give you a glimpse of how we manage our remodeling and construction projects. It’s called Builder Trend, and it’s available for both our crew and clients to access via the “login” link from our website.
Once logged in, there are several areas you can visit. Here is the calendar view:
Each client’s project is color coded. For the month of December, you’ll notice we focused on two major projects (colored in orange and blue).
From there, you can read which work was scheduled for which project. As an example, on December 1st we were doing demo on one project and adding siding, drywall, and paint to another. We also had a meeting about framing out one of our projects.
From Builder Trend, we can also exchange messages, upload key documents and plans, add change orders, and manage our current list of subcontractors in a seamless way.
How this helps our Crew
By having a schedule set up online, our crew can easily see what work needs to get done when and where. It has also been a helpful tool for communicating with our subcontractors and suppliers. As a final bonus, managing our schedule and projects online is a one way we can keep things “green” at Fat Boy Construction.
At Fat Boy, we recognize that first and foremost, this is your home and we take that seriously. We encourage you to be as involved as you want to be. Giving you the opportunity to login to Builder Trend from our site is one way we aim to keep the communication lines running.

In spite of chilly and rainy Pacific Northwest weather, the Fatboy Construction crew had been hard at work on the Lakewood remodel project we started late this summer.
The front of the house is nearly ready for siding. The stone work is complete and the front doors have been installed.
Here is a view of the covered porch. We added a side door for an alternate way of accessing the entryway. The posts will soon be wrapped with wood to give this porch a classic, craftsman feel.

Work continues at the rear of the home, too. We recently installed the glass French doors and skylights for the covered patio area. This will be an attractive, yet functional, living space for the homeowner!

Here is another view of the work-in-progress covered patio:

This project is coming together quite quickly at this point. Stay tuned for our progress!

Progress continues on our Lakewood remodel project.
Here is how the entryway used to look:
And here is how the entryway looks now:
We also completed the stone work for the newly-framed covered porch. The final look is elegant and distinctive.
The walls have been prepped for new, quality siding that should last the homeowner years. This project is really starting to come together!
Stay tuned for updates on this and other Fatboy Construction projects.

We recently started an extensive remodel of a home on American Lake. Of course, we wanted to share our progress with you – from start to finish!
Here is a current view of the home:
We removed a carport from the front of the house and have begun construction of the foundation. The forms are in place, and we’re ready to pour the concrete footings.
Our plans include erecting a breezeway that will connect the new garage to the house.
The house will undergo a complete overhaul with new windows, siding, and roofing. This should be another dramatic Fat Boy transformation, so stay tuned for more updates in the weeks to come.
By the way, “like” Fat Boy on Facebook for updates on our progress, additional photos, and more!
