To give our Steilacoom custom home a timeless, craftsman feel, quarter sawn oak cabinets have been installed in the kitchen, family, and dining areas. By cutting the lumber at a quarter (90 degrees), the oak produces a cleaner look with lines that are tight-grained and run parallel, not diagonal. Cutting the lumber this way also brings out visually stunning ray flecks in the oak. Quarter sawn oak is highly prized because it takes considerable more time to cut and yields less lumber than its plain sawn counterpart. Due to its expense, it is not widely selected for cabinetry.
To match the beauty of the oak cabinets, we’ve selected black honed granite slabs for the countertop, and created a backsplash using stainless steel and travertine tiles. To keep this kitchen both beautiful and functional, we opted to use under-cabinet lighting as well as plug molds.
The sizeable island will be perfect for entertaining. We’ve added a prep sink to allow both chef and sous chef room to work comfortably. You might have noticed we selected a distinctly different granite slab for the island than we used for the countertops. When designing a beautiful kitchen, we believe in selecting quality materials with natural characteristics that harmonize with one another.
Next week, we’ll share our nearly-completed dining and living spaces for this beautiful Steilacoom home.
